Learn about oocyte retrieval needles, their role in IVF procedures, and how advanced designs ensure precise, safe egg collection with minimal discomfort.
The Oocyte Retrieval Needle, also known as “egg retrieval needle”, “ovum pickup needle”, “oocyte aspiration needles”, “single/double lumen needle”, is a long, thin needle that collects oocyte by piercing a woman’s ovaries for processes such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and oocyte freezing in assisted reproductive technology (ART). As one of the most important variables in surgery, the number of embryos obtained may be subject to the type of aspiration needle (wide / narrow bore or single / double channel). Manners Technology offers the widest range of Oocyte Retrieval Needles with single lumen (from 16G to 21G) and double lumen (from 16G to 18G).
Owing to avoiding invasive surgery, ultrasound-guided transvaginal oocyte retrieval has replaced laparoscopic retrieval as the gold standard for human in-vitro fertilization. During IVF treatment, the woman will first undergo a period of ovulation stimulation to stimulate follicular development. When the follicles are mature and large enough, the doctor will use an egg retrieval needle to extract the eggs by puncturing the ovaries under ultrasound guidance. The extracted egg then combines with sperm in the laboratory to form a fertilized egg, which develops into an embryo that is eventually transferred back into the mother’s uterus.
Oocyte retrieval needles are particularly important in this process, and strict hygiene conditions are required to avoid infection and other complications. Furthermore, there are indications that, it is likely that within the range of conventional needles, smaller size results in less pain intra- and postoperatively, with a similar number of collected oocytes. Having worked in the field of medical-grade products for many years, Manners Technology has always been dedicated to high-precision hygienic products with the spirit of craftsmanship, customizing a wide range of sizes and requirements for customers.
Oocyte retrieval needles are categorized into single lumen and double lumen needles. Single lumen needles have ultra-smooth inner and outer walls, reducing damage to the oocyte-ovarian complex and facilitating penetration of the vaginal wall and ovarian stroma, and single lumen needles are equipped with a flushing needle, which is capable of flushing the egg-absorbing cavity and increasing the rate of egg retrieval. While the double lumen needle not only has the same wall characteristics as the single lumen needle, but also has a unique tip structure with a 3-mm-diameter flushing cavity in the side wall of the egg-absorbing cavity, which allows simultaneous egg absorption and flushing of eggs in the ovary to maximize the rate of egg retrieval. It is able to avoid the strong suction force of a single chamber needle, reducing the impact on the eggs during aspiration and providing greater protection for the eggs.
The oocyte retrieval needle consists of a needle tube, a needle holder, a flushing tube (plus a suction tube for double lumen), test tube bung, flushing tube connector and negative pressure connector. The Needle Tube can be made of stainless steel 304, 316 L, or L 605, Ni-Ti; the needle holder is often made of polycarbonate and polypropylene; the suction tube and flushing tube are made of ethylene fluoride, the test tube bung is made of silicone, and the flushing tube connector and negative pressure connector are made of polycarbonate.
The thinner diameters are ideal for patients with low response, natural cycles or for working without anesthesia during the ovarian puncture. Manners Technology offers the needle that enables a fast and precise procedure that minimizes stress, ensures the maximum number of intact retrieved oocytes, and allows minimal tissue damage to keep patient from complications and discomfort.
With Luer lock connector, the needle’s ergonomic handle also has position marker that provides additional control throughout the oocyte pick-up and helps to control the position of the needle blade. Manners Technology’s less pain thin-wall design (wall thickness: 0.08mm~2mm±0.02mm) allows oocyte retrieval to be carried out with a smaller gauge needle and therefore reduces the possibility of bleeding and the risk of injuries to the uterine lining, whilst minimizing stress in the oocyte during aspiration. Our highly echogenic needle tip has ultra-sharp design for low penetration resistance and exact precision, providing extraordinary sharpness, exact precision and the utmost safety. Its bevel grinding ensures low resistance penetration and distinctive backpoint grinding prevents deviation. Otherwise, through laser etching, the innovative echo marking is created to permit the high visibility required during oocyte retrieval.
