Learn about Tuohy needles, designed with a curved tip for safe epidural catheter placement, widely used in spinal anesthesia and other medical procedures.
The Tuohy Needle, also known as “Tuohy epidural needle”, “epidural needle” or “Huber point needle”, is a hollow hypodermic needle intended for use in inserting epidural catheters. Literally, Tuohy epidural needle is simply the needle that is placed into the epidural space, and they are designed with a curved tip to help prevent puncture of the dural membrane. In Manners Technology, the Tuohy needle gauge can range from 25-gauge to 14-gauge (extra-long needles for obese patients and other customized sizes are available), serving the population from novice injectionists to more experienced injectionist.
Tuohy needle proves the most used one of multiple types of epidural needles (which include Tuohy, Hustead, Crawford, Weiss, etc.) As the perfect obstetrical needle, Tuohy needle features a rounded bevel cutting edge, sharp tip and very slightly curved at the end (also called back-eye). The needle was mainly designed for use in disposable or continuous spinal anesthesia. It can be used in the arthroscopic management of peripheral ulnar tears of the triangular fibrocartilage complex, IDDS for spasticity, dystonia, and rigidity, interpleural analgesia, epiduroscopy, intrathecal saline injection for postdural puncture headache, lumbar puncture and lumbar drain placement, electrophysiological testing and cervical epidural nerve block.
Manners Technology is able to produce the Tuohy needle code 18G that includes an opening in the curved distal end of the needle, which is useful when anesthetists performing a combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. In addition, we can also provide customized products for patients with special body types or other special situations.
Easy to read and identify, the needle has brown and silver markings along the metallic shaft at 10 mm intervals which are conveniently used for visually determining the needle depth. In terms of safety, the heel of the bevel is smoothed to reduce the risk of cutting the epidural catheter, and curved blunt cutting tip with buffed heel allows safer epidural procedures. Besides, to increase the stability of needle, the flush ends of metal stylet and needle are designed for reducing the risk of tissue displacement. Manners Technology uses the highest tensile strength 304 stainless steel stylet and firm cannulas for smooth insertions and the hub of the stylet is color-coded according to the diameter of the needle and features a lug to indicate the orientation of the bevel.
