1. What are Meniscal Repair Needles?

The Meniscal Repair Needle, also known as “meniscal delivery needles”, is a complete system with cannula, needle, and rasp, designed for meniscal repair surgery to repair meniscal tears in the knee joint. Meniscal tears are one of the most common injuries in sport medicine. Preferable over partial or total meniscectomies, many meniscal repair techniques such as outside-in, inside-out, and all-inside have been described for the treatment of these tears. The Manners Technology needle system allows the delivery needle to navigate the intricate anatomy of the knee joint and reach the meniscus, streamlining the repair process.

2. Applications

Increasingly being repaired in an attempt to prevent the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA), Meniscal Repair Needle is becoming more and more practical in orthopedic surgery. Surgeons utilize the needle system to thread sutures through the meniscus, making the sutures of torn tissue more precise and safe. Meniscal repairs, although having a higher reoperation rate, have been found to have better long-term outcomes and cost savings relative to meniscectomy as they aim to restore a functional meniscus and possibly prevent early degenerative changes. Manners Technology’s needle is able to be applied to posterior, middle, and anterior body tears and presents an improved patient experience, decreased soft-tissue trauma, speedier recovery and less need for personnel and hospital facilities.

3. Material Options & Sizes

Meniscal repair needles (the delivery needles) are made from stainless steel 304 or titanium alloy with needle tips available in curved, reverse curved, and straight options. These materials provide high fixation strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, ensuring the needle’s stability reliability and longevity. On the market, meniscal repair needle is usually in 16G or 17G, and working length is around 150mm. With precise dimensions, Manners Technology system enables all-zone all-inside meniscal repair to treat tears previously not accessible, and is also available in a wide range of lengths and diameters, allowing surgeons to select the most appropriate needle size based on the patient’s anatomy and the severity of the meniscal tear.

4. Manufacturing

Meniscal repair needle with super sharp needle tip is intended to have good penetration into the meniscus. It has been designed to bend the needle and shaft, which can enhance accessibility by reaching tears previous unreachable. Manners Technology’s curved meniscal delivery needle is optimally bended at the tip section and allows rotation of the needle tip by surgeons away from the neurovascular structures during penetrating operations into the meniscus.

Of course, there were inevitably some risks and limitations for this meniscal repair technique. For example, during the process of penetrating, there is a risk that the suture material may be cut by the beveled needle tip. Using our custom-designed meniscal repair needle can effectively avoid this problem and ensure accurate penetrate and reduce the risk of cartilage injury during surgery. In addition, there are some other risks such as incision infection, meniscus re-injury, which can be avoided with sterile operations and standard rehabilitation exercises.
